Behind the scenes

The vision behind Fasting Companion

For most of my career, I’ve worked in technology.

Like a lot of people, I’d experimented with intermittent fasting over the years for health reasons, and from time to time I had fasted and prayed with mates — or for mates — during difficult seasons. But if I’m honest, there wasn’t much structure or intentionality to my own fasting journey.

That changed earlier this year.

In January, my wife and I felt deeply convicted to take fasting more seriously as part of our spiritual life. We wanted to reset our attitude toward food (yes, and that included getting our health in order), create more intentional space for prayer, and seek God more deeply in some of the areas we had been praying into for a long time.

As I started that journey, the technology side of my brain naturally went looking for an app to help guide the process.

But almost everything I found focused entirely on:
  • weight loss
  • body transformation
  • dieting
  • health optimisation
And while there is nothing wrong with health-focused fasting, it felt like something was missing.

I wanted something that leaned into the spiritual side of fasting.
Something quieter.
More reflective.
More grounded in prayer and spiritual formation.

When I couldn’t find what I was looking for, I decided to build it myself.

That led to a lot of late nights writing code, refining ideas, testing features, and slowly shaping something that genuinely helped me in my own journey.

At the same time, my wife brought her background as a writer into the project and began developing the reflections, devotional content, prayers, and guided material that now form a huge part of the experience.

What started as a personal tool slowly became something we felt could help other people too.

That’s really the heart behind Fasting Companion.

Not performance.
Not hype.
Not “spiritual productivity.”

Just a simple companion to help people create intentional space for God through prayer, fasting, reflection, and daily spiritual rhythms.

We’re incredibly grateful you’re here, and we genuinely hope this community and the app become helpful companions in your own journey as well.

We’d truly love to hear your thoughts, experiences, or reflections as you use it.
